Meet Me

THE BODY

I birth figures and portraits engaged in wonderment about the nature of reality. My work is devoted to the body as playground, battlefield, and temple of the psycho-spiritual life. In my figures I want the body intact, an integral thing full of meaning. Our bodies are valuable, universally vulnerable, and vibrating with inherent wisdom.

The Eternal Fiesta

You probably have your own sacred, still point where you can contact your inner being. Maybe it’s a place, or a practice. After my first long sojourn in Italy, the day before I was to return to the U.S., I sat in a sunny park in Pietrasanta near my alley apartment and closed my eyes. Nearly instantly, I felt long tendrils of roots burrowing from my feet deeply into the Italian soil: my family roots, our artistic heritage, marble dust, earth, light and bone in comforting connection to the earth. The next day, I did not want to remove my feet from the Italian ground to step up onto the airplane home. I carried that sensation and a commitment to a certain artistic path forward.

 sculpting MaxMETHOD

I cultivate this sort of imagination as a method of knowing and as a way of responding to design. Such powerful images revitalize me, leaving me infused with nutrients for sustaining the tension of the creative process. I value intensive study in the tradition of the old masters, always working from life – the study of technique and aesthetics as well as of nature and of reality itself.

 FIRST CIRCLE

Creation happens in concentric movement around what is often at first an amorphous idea. The biological cell, atomic nuclei, particle tracks in a collider that leave disk images, Tai Chi forms – the circle may be the seed of reality. To make art is to willingly find an entry point on that circumference and to engage the spiralling journey of the creative process. This is, for me, the act of being alive in a sentient universe, whether one is an artist or engaged in any other circle of activity. First Circle Studios is my joyful space for the emergence of bronze, stone, and metal sculpture designed for inquisitive clients who love classical beauty - people who are attuned to and curious about the mystery that encompasses us.
